What is a Men’s Shed?

Men’s Sheds are dedicated, friendly, and welcoming meeting places where men come together to share skills, enjoy companionship, and undertake a variety of mutually agreed activities.

The Shed movement began in Australia in the 1980s to improve the health and wellbeing of older men by reducing social isolation. What started as simple woodshops has grown into a global network of Sheds with unique themes and focuses. Today, some Sheds are even “virtual,” meeting online to connect members wherever they are.

At their heart, Men’s Sheds are open to all men — regardless of age, background, or ability. They provide space for craftwork, conversation, and social interaction. Members can share knowledge, learn new skills, or rediscover old ones, all while building friendships in a supportive environment.

Here in North Palm Beach, our Shed is a hybrid model: weekly meetings are either in person or via Zoom. We are dedicated to advancing the health and wellbeing of our members, passing on traditions, and fostering inclusion, equality, and friendship. Shoulder-to-shoulder conversations, camaraderie, and fun are at the center of everything we do.

• Combats social isolation and loneliness:  The Shed offers a place for men especially those who are retired or experiencing a major life transition, to build new friendships and social networks.
• Provides a sense of purpose and belonging: Members often find a renewed sense of purpose by contributing to projects, mentoring others, and having a reason to leave the house and maintain a routine.
• Supports mental health:  The camaraderie and peer support help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by creating a safe space for men to open up about personal struggles or health concerns without judgment, often referred to as talking “shoulder to shoulder”.
• Boosts self-esteem and confidence: Engaging in activities and learning new skills helps improve self-worth and independence.
